Suspect at large in connection to Chorten vandalism

As of December 29, Jomotshangkha police in Samdrupjongkhar were still looking for the suspect who vandalized a Jangchub Chorten located at Phajo Gonpa, Lauri on the morning of 27 December.

The complaint was lodged by Gup Tempa Gyeltshen and police carried out an investigation along with Drunkhag and gewog staff. The unknown miscreant had dug from the Bumpa portion facing northwest direction to a depth of 16 inches.

Police said the chorten, belonging to Leki Wangchuk of Phajo Gonpa, is located about 39 meters from his house. “Since the Chorten is 50 years old built by his late father, no one in the family knows about the actual zungs inside the chorten,” police said.

The team accompanied by administration officer from the drunkhag office handed over the remaining zungs recovered from the vandalized chorten to the Mangmi. The remaining zung includes a two-eyed dzee, two four-eyed fake dzee, eight corals, five aluminum altar cups and five old coins.

Police said that searched in and around the chorten for clues and they found that the unknown miscreant had used a wooden plank to dig the Bumpa portion.

Villagers said that they did not suspect anyone from the village. They had not seen any strangers in the village either.
