10,105 tablets seized in second biggest drug haul to date

In the latest drug raid, the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) has seized 10,105 SP capsules this year. This is the second highest record.

In just two and a half month, 38 cases of drugs related issues have been handled by the police till date.

Phuentsholing police arrested two men in possession of 10,105 capsules of SP on February 5 staying at Samling Inn, Phuentsholing.  One of the men, 31 years old, is from Bara, Samtse while the other, 37 years old man is from Shengana, Punakha.

Both of the men are unemployed, RBP arrested them based on the information given by an informer. The two bags filled with SP capsules were hidden under a bed.

Upon interrogation, police said the suspects said the drugs were meant for self-consumption. However, RBP said it is impossible that such a huge number of drugs were bought for self-consumption. RBP said it must have been meant for business purpose.

On checks for drug use, the suspects tested positive for Benzodiazepine. Police also said that the suspect have confessed to sharing some of the substance with their friends in the past.

Both of them are being detained by the Phuentsholing police and the case is under investigation. Their case will be charge sheeted to court when investigations are completed.

As per Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse Act of Bhutan 2015, Section 141, the offence of illicit trafficking of any substance listed under Schedule III and IV of this Act shall be; a felony of third degree if the quantity is equal to or more than two times the quantity determined in Schedule VII of this Act. Or a felony of fourth degree, if the quantity is equal to or more than the quantity determined in Schedule VII of this Act but less than two times the quantity determined

Similarly, on  February 6 at around 19:30 hrs, a 29-year-old man was arrested from Semtokha in possession of 40 capsules of SP and 5 tablets of N10.

The suspect was riding a bike without a number plate whereby upon checking, he was found with those drugs in his pocket.

He also tested positive for Benzodiazepine and Marijuana (THC). He is from Simphu, Trongsa and is unemployed. The suspect is under Thimphu police and the case is still under investigation.

The highest record of drugs seized by RBP was set in August 2013. They seized 10,904 Spasmoproxyvon (SP) capsules at the time.

The RBP, with the help of informers, has been busting drugs and controlled substances being smuggled into the country for a while.
