11 families left homeless after Thimphu fire

Eleven families lost their homes to a fire at Changgedaphu, popularly known as Kalabazar, in Thimphu. The incident took place on 5 September at around 5:30 am.

A total of 6 huts were lost to the fire. In addition, parts of a building, an attic with three tenants, just next to the huts was also lost to the fire. The rescue team managed to contain the fire before it spread to the nearby houses.

Police said that the probable cause of the fire is an electric short circuit. However, they are yet to ascertain the actual cause of the fire and from where the fire was first started. Police said, “It is hard to say from where the fire was started as the huts were clustered.”

The fire was witnessed by one of the victims who woke up to go to the washroom. Although no casualties were reported, most of the victims lost most or all of their belongings to the fire.

Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
