In a shocking incident, a 13-year-old girl was reportedly raped by a friend of her father, who is a police constable on 18 May 2024.
The constable, who was assisting the family in performing the annual ritual (Rimdro), allegedly committed the heinous act after they were alone, as the girl’s father and sister were away at the hospital in the evening.
According to sources, both parties have admitted to engaging in sexual intercourse. However, a consensus on the nature of the act has not been established.
Despite claims of consensual activity by the constable, the girl has admitted that the act was forceful.
As per the Penal Code of Bhutan, a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of rape of a child above the age of twelve years, if the defendant has sexual intercourse with a child between the age of twelve to eighteen years.
The offence of rape of a child above the age of twelve years shall be a felony of the second degree.
