34 acres of fallow wet land Gasa to be used for vegetable cultivation

The Farm Machinery Corporation Limited (FMCL) will use a 34-acre area of fallow wetland in Tashithangkha, Gasa, for extensive chili and other vegetable cultivation. The area was left fallow because of labour shortage and crop damage by wild life.

“Gasa dzongkhag sought us because we have the capacity to execute the activity, Jitshen Wangchuk, Head of Contract Farming, FMCL, said. “The dzongkhag administration has further assured us electric fencing materials to help protect the crops from wild animals.” Tashithangkha will be the third contract farming site after Norzinthang, Trashigang and Tsentoshari under Paro dzongkhag taken up by  FMCL.

FMCL will use the land for free for three years and 20 per cent of the production will go to the land owner as per the rules and regulation on land use”,Bajo Regional Manager, Jurmey Tenzin said.

Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer (DAO), Tshering N Penjor said that Gasa dzongkhag is known for producing early chilli and different varieties of vegetables like potato and tomato. “Tashithangkha is not very far and has very fertile soil,” the DAO said.

The chilli nursery is already raised in the green house installed in the Regional office.
