Her Royal Highness the Princess of Thailand, Makha Chakri Sirindhorn, visited Bhutan and toured a few of the central schools to see agriculture programs started under HRH’s patronage.
On the first day His Majesty The King granted an Audience to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand at the Tashichhodzong.
The Princess was escorted to the Dzong in a traditional Chipdrel ceremony to receive the Audience with His Majesty. His Majesty and the Princess offered prayers for the good health and long life of the King of Thailand His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej and lit butterlamps at the Grand Kuenrey of the Tashichhodzong.
During the four-day royal visit, HRH Princess Sirindhorn traveled to Wanakha Central School in Paro, Wangbama Central School in Thimphu and Samtengang Central School in Wangduephodrang.
With gracious funds and support from HRH, six central schools in the country have started agriculture farming, food processing units, greenhouses, piggery, poultry, and dairy farming, and health clinic.
Wanakha Central School, Paro
Students, staff and Dzongkhag officials received the Princess of Thailand on May 23 at Wanakha Central School.
Following the cultural activities, the school principal presented a report on the activities being carried out in the school under the auspices of HRH the Princess of Thailand, and also presented the details of fund allocation.
The principal shared that with the generous support from the Princess, Wanakha Central School has not only achieved vegetable self-sufficiency, but the school is able to market its surplus product in the nearby market and to school staff.
Wangbama Central School, Thimphu
On May 24, Princess Sirindhorn was received by Agriculture Minister, Dzongrab, principal and staff of Wangbama Central School.
While in the school, students showcased various cultural dances and offered souvenirs to HRH. Similarly, the Princess also gave away gifts to the school.
HRH Princess Sirindhorn visited the school campus, classrooms and agriculture fields. In the evening, HRH was invited for a private dinner in Lingkana Palace by His Majesty The King.
Samtengang Central School, Wangdue
On her third day of visit in the country, HRH visited Samtengang Central School in Wangdue. Minister of Education, Dzongrab, principal, teachers, students and government officials received the Princess.
Briefing on school profile and progress on the collaborative project was given by the principal, followed by cultural activities and gift awarding. The Princess also visited the school campus, agriculture fields, cowshed and greenhouse. Princess Sirindhorn inaugurated the school’s poultry farm. After the event in the school, HRH departed for Punakha and paid a visit to Punakha Dzong.
In her fourth day, HRH visited the Royal Botanical Garden and departed for the Paro International Airport in afternoon. HRH also planted tree saplings during the school visits.
A fund of USD 84,533 was used in the six schools to promote agricultural activities. The first three funded schools were Wanakha, Wangbama and Yurung while the Princess selected three more schools later.
It is learnt that Princess Sirindhorn was pleased to see the hard work put in by the staff and students of the six central schools in promoting the agriculture activities.
