A Green Corporation

To promote a clean and green environment, one of the Governments’ initiatives, the Green Bhutan Corporation Limited (GBCL) was inaugurated in Semtokha last week.

At the inauguration, the minister for Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji said that the inspiration to establish GCBL was drawn from His Majesty’s message delivered at the first Royal Bhutan Flower Exhibition in April 2015.

According to the GBCL Chairman, Phento Tshering, also the Director for Forests and Park Services, including the tree planting works, GCBL is also mandated for landscaping, urban greening, consultancy and floriculture among others. He added that it will promote tourism and help generate clean energy through hydropower constructions. It will also help agriculture sectors by providing uninterrupted water supply for irrigation and livestock sector through mass plantation of fodder species

GBCL has six staff including the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), DS Rai. It has a budget of Nu. 33 mn to carry out its activities in its first year during which it will recruit 298 more staff.

GBCL is the second of the three corporations which the Government approved in 2016. The first corporation, the Farm Mechanisation Corporation Limited was launched last year in Paro. The Ministry will launch the third corporation for the livestock soon.

The inauguration was also attended by the representatives from Thimphu Thromde, WWF, GBCL Board of Directors, departmental and agencies heads from the Ministry among others. Following the inauguration, Lyonpo and the guests offered a Trashi Khadhar to the CEO.
