An auspicious birth

The Royal Birth of Her Royal Highness The Gyalsem is not only auspicious for its date and the astrological signs, but what her birth symbolizes and the period in which Her Royal Highness is being born is also very important.

The Royal Birth is a joyous occasion and most Bhutanese received the news like a child was being born into their own family.

A Royal Birth is a major event given the importance of the Monarchy and the Wangchuck Dynasty, the important role it plays in our nationhood and our lives and the respect and love for the institution and those who head it.

It will be nice to have the soft touch of a princess who no doubt will serve as a role model for Bhutanese girls and families.

While we are a traditional society, girls and women play an important role in our society and state and the perspectives they bring to the table is so important, especially in these times.

When one thinks of it, Their Majesties already have two wonderful Gyalseys and so one would assume that the continuity is assured and their duty in this aspect is done.

However, at a time when many Bhutanese couples are opting to have only one or two children and when the national fertility rate is below the replacement rate, a third royal child sends a loud and clear message. This is also in the backdrop of Royal concern over our declining fertility rate.

Pregnancy, childbirth and what comes after in terms of a lifetime of commitment to the child is not easy for any family, but the fact that Their Majesties took this step shows their commitment to the nation.

Their Majesties have always believed in leading by example be it His Majesty risking his life and well being during COVID 19, and now Her Majesty putting her body and health on the line to send an important message for the continuity of not only the Wangchuck Dynasty but also Bhutan.

There is no doubt that Bhutan is facing tough times unlike what it has ever faced before and the situation looks grim.

However, the Royal Birth of the Gyalsem offers us that gentle but deeply touching and strong whisper of confidence in our selves and hope for the future.

The Gyalsem is also a timely reminder for us to create a better future for our children.
