Unlike other days, when they are dressed in school uniforms, the students of Tshangkha Lower Secondary School (LSS) in Dagana dzongkhag wearing shorts and pants, gathered at the school ground to take part in the annual marathon race organized every year by the school.
Excited about the race, the students battled the cold weather outside in the open air on 7 April. Some were dressed in half pants with sneakers while some were in slippers and school shoes. But they waited patiently for the whistle to blow.
Jyoti Rai, 12-years old emerged winner beating 160 female participants in the 12 kilometers (to and fro) race with a 46.2 minutes timing to beat on the clock. Almost all the girls managed to complete the race though there were few who were injured during the race.
Meanwhile, 15-year old Arjun Subha from class VI bagged the winning title of the year after completing the run in 41.6 minutes. He ran 14 kilometers (to and fro).
As the individual winners ran toward the finishing point, students along with some teachers cheered for them. There were a total of 330 students participating in the run and the students from class IV to VIII were eligible to take part.
The winners will be awarded a cash prize along with the certificate during sports day which will be conducted today.
A cash prize of Nu 1,000 will be awarded to the winners, Nu 800 to the second and Nu 700 for the third position holders.
The school sports instructor (SSI), Bikash Rai said marathon is conducted every year and this is the third one. He said one of the objectives for conducting such event was basically to keep the students fit and active.
With the completion of the race, the participants along with the school faculties involved in the show were served refreshment followed by a simple lunch.
