Bhutanese citizens should be free to move to safe countries across the world for studies or work, and this is what is being followed with no restrictions of any kind by the government.
We have seen the migration of thousands of Bhutanese in the last two years facilitated by Education Consultancies.
This has meant a huge amount of revenue for Education Consultancies and many have done very well for themselves in this gold rush.
The migration seems to have reached its peak and it is now tapering off as numbers to destinations like Australia decrease with new regulations there.
It has also peaked as those who had to go already left.
However, it seems that some education consultancies are not willing to accept this tapering off but they want to maintain the high level of migration by opening up new destinations.
It is okay if the new destinations are what they are advertised to be, but the ground reality is quite different.
There is information, videos and messages from Bhutanese abroad warning of certain destinations not being as rosy as promised and people facing difficulty there, but consultancies are determined to present a rosy picture.
At times, they even give conflicting claims about the same country with one saying it is not a good destination and another saying it is a good option.
Bhutanese are free to study and work abroad but they should not be taken for a ride with false advertising meant to line the pockets of consultancies.
It is high time that the relevant authorities start checking into the claims made by these companies and to also check if these students are being cheated or not.
The loss of large numbers of young Bhutanese abroad has had a devastating impact on the local economy and in other areas. It is okay to a certain extent if those who go abroad are doing well but it is not okay if they have to struggle and start coming back with loans.
Honesty is the best policy.
