Two lovers who eloped to Kalimpong have been detained by the Lhamoizingkha police after a formal complaint was lodged on 9 October by the wife of the man.
A relative of the wife told police that the lovers were in Kalimpong. The 28 year old wife reported that her husband’s 30 year old lover was also missing the same day.
Police then informed the Devitar village tshogpa to tell the couple to report to the police station or give their address.
The couple was arrested from Sakhu a place under Chhukha on 11 November. The case was forwarded to the dungkhag court on 26 November.
The couple has been booked under section 169 of the Penal Code of Bhutan which states that a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of criminal elopement, if the defendant takes any person whether married or otherwise from a place with intent that the person may have illicit intercourse with the defendant or any other person.
The offence of criminal elopement shall be a misdemeanor (imprisonment of less than three years and a minimum term of one year).
The man, a farmer by occupation is married with five children.
