Girl drowns in artificial lake

A 17-year old girl drowned to death at the artificial lake near the airport gate in Paro on the afternoon of 3 March.

Sonam Choden, the deceased was out swimming with her friend also called Sonam Choden and of the same age.

A prime witness of the incident Sonam Choden said, “We were swimming when suddenly she left my hand saying that she knows how to swim. Then she went under the water and I was afraid but she came out.  Again she did the same and this time I thought she was joking with me and I did not react.”

“When she did not come out for some time, I got worried and screamed for her name. But there was no answer. Then I searched for her under the water but all in vain. I called my friends and one of the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) officials from the airport came for help but still we could not locate her,” she said.

Later, the Police were informed and after hours of search the body was found around 4 pm, but it was too late.

One of the employees of Bhutan Elite Security based at Bondey had lodged a complaint with the Paro police station about the incident.

The victim had just completed the security training a week ago and was on leave.

The body was handed over to the family members of the victim.
