On an average, at least two people are apprehended in a day for possession of controlled and illegal substances in the border town of Phuentsholing, according to police.
Drug related cases in the southern border town are on the rise with at least seven to eight cases in a week police said.
On September 12, police apprehended a 27-year old Indian national at the border entry checkpoint with 200 capsules of SP, one N10 tablet in his bag and 104 grams of dry marijuana from his suitcase. The man from Kolkata, West Bengal, is a sales manager with the IT Park in Thimphu.
On the same day police apprehended a 16-year old girl with 10 sachets of dry marijuana, a diluter, a hookah, and six N10 tablets. The patrolling team apprehended the girl, from Khoma, Lhuentse, while on their rounds.
Police said that 75 percent of detainees in Phuentsholing are in connection to drug related issues and more than 50 percent of detainees are youths.
