Man arrested following rape complaint by a minor

A 33-year-old man from Mongar was arrested by Thimphu police on 22 July following a complaint by 16 year old school girl a day earlier.

The man owns a private business while the girl is a class X student who was temporarily working in a hotel during her summer vacation.

Accompanied by a relative the 16-year-old student lodged a complaint with police saying they had a sexual intercourse twice on the same day. Both the victim and suspect were strangers to each other at the time of incident.

The incident took place on 21 July at around 6:30 PM when the girl was heading home towards Changzamtog from her temporary work place. As per her statement to the police, she said that she was walking alone with an umbrella as it was raining. She met the suspect on the way and he asked her to let him share her umbrella.

Thereafter, they walked all the way to Changzamtog whereby after reaching there, the man refused to give back her umbrella. Following that, both of them came to town in taxi and he promised to buy her a mobile phone. Though they went to a mobile shop, the suspect said that it was expensive and that he would buy her one some other day.

They then went into a nearby public toilet and had sexual intercourse. After that, they went in a taxi towards (Chang-gedaphu) Kala bazaar and walked towards her house in Changzamtog. In the middle of the walk the girl claimed that he again forced her to have sex for the second time.

Police said the suspect confessed to have gone around with the girl but denied having sex.

The girl has been sent for medical examination and a detailed report from hospital is awaited. The suspect has been detained for further investigation.
