Man convicted for 21 years for raping a 2 year old toddler

The Royal Court of Justice has convicted a 39-year-old farmer from Jigmicholling Sarpang for the rape of a 2-year old girl toddler.

Thimphu police arrested the rapist on January 23, 2016. The convict has confessed to the crime in his first statement to the police, whereby later he claims to have given the statement under the duress of the police.

Upon further cross-examination with police and the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), the convict could not prove that the police had tortured him in anyway. Therefore, his first statement was taken note of by the court.

The convict was in the capital for Nu 300,000 loan processing and had taken the child to a manidungkar area in Babesa. The convict is said to have committed the heinous crime under influence of alcohol.

The court, after a thorough investigation and prosecution, convicted him to a 21-year prison term and he has to pay Nu 180, 000 as compensation to the victim’s family.
