Man dies from bee attack

A 26-year-old man from Chuzagang, Sarpang dzongkhag, died after he was attacked by what are believed to be bees, locally known as khago, at the crossroad near Gelephu dungkhag office, while on his way to work.

“Without provocation or warning, a large swarm of bees descended on him,” his wife said.

People saw him lying on the ground covered by bees but they were not able to help.

“There were children playing and they must have possibly disturbed a hive in the nearby trees,” a resident said.

“He ran across, grabbed a hat lying nearby and tried to stop the attack but the swarm was so overwhelming covering him like a blanket,” an witnesses said.

The shopkeeper who witnessed the whole incident called the ambulance that took him to the hospital. According to the Gelephu Hospital, the man was brought dead to the hospital at 7:30 AM.

“In an instant, the victim was engulfed in a swarm of angry insects that attacked his face, head and arms,” the shopkeeper said.

The brother-in-law of the deceased said the deceased had high blood pressure but was never allergic to bees. According to him the deceased had around 20 sting marks on his body.

“Some people are allergic to the sting but my husband wasn’t,” Deo Maya Pradhan, the wife of the deceased, said. “I heard it’s dangerous but never expected it to be life threatening.”

“He was an outdoors guy,” his friend said.
