Maternity leave reform only in CS so far

The Minister for Labor and Human Resources presented a report on the implementation status of increasing maternity leave outside the civil service.

The Minister informed that the ministry has held consultations with various stakeholders and has emphasized on the importance of increasing the maternity leave.

The Minister, however, highlighted that the government cannot directly issue directives to the private and corporate sectors to increase maternity leave as it would have implications on women’s employment in these sectors.

The House was also informed some of the private offices have already implemented granting three months maternity leave as compared to two months in the existing rules.

Some of the MPs expressed that it was not fair to have six months maternity leave in civil service while same was not implemented in other sectors.

The House resolved that the government should continue working with private and corporate sectors to effectively implement maternity leave.
