MoF: New SOE to sort out fake Indian lotteries

The Finance Minister, Lyonpo Namgay Dorji said that the ministry would let the new State Owned Enterprise (SOE) for Bhutan Lottery handle the issue of 17 Indian lottery companies falsely claiming to be Bhutan Lottery and representing the Bhutan government since 2011 onwards.

An investigation by this paper showed that the 17 Indian companies posing as Bhutan Lottery as a result made billions in revenue since 2011 onwards in the name of Bhutan and its government.

“Since any evidence and figures have not come to us directly the only action plan is to first start our Bhutan Lottery,” said Lyonpo.

He said that once Bhutan Lottery starts they would take action against anyone falsely claiming to be Bhutan Lottery.

“Once we start a legal Bhutan Lottery it is not fair and legal to have any illegal ones. We will lawfully counter them,” said the minister.

The minister said that the Bhutan Lottery SOE’s board has been selected and the next step is getting approval from the cabinet for a CEO. He said once the CEO is selected then staff recruitment can be done by the CEO and the Board after which the company can start functioning.

The Minister said that the business will first start in Bhutan and then gradually move into India.
