Four house owners and nine tenant families lost everything to the fire in Bajo Town in Wangdue which occurred at around 2:45 AM on June 17. A six-storied building, two two-storied traditional houses, three mud huts, and one temporary shelter were completely razed to ground by the fire.
According police reports, the fire started from a hut that later on spread to nearby houses. The total damage is yet to be ascertained. The owner of three houses (one hut and two traditional houses) damaged by the fire, Dorji, has already received Nu 320,000 from RICBL as his houses were insured.
The remaining houses insured with RICBL will soon receive the insured amount once RICBL is done with its investigation. All affected families received Nu 10,000 each as Semso from His Majesty The King.
As a temporary measure, the vegetable sheds were turned into a relief shelter for the affected families by Toedtsho gewog and the Dzongkhag. Health Minister Tandin Wangchuk has made personal visits to the affected families.
A concrete building was partially damaged as the fire was brought under control before it could damage the entire building.
It is suspected that the fire started due to electric short circuit, but the authorities are yet to investigate the main cause of the fire. No casualty has been reported from the fire.
