The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) will be charge sheeting three rape cases from Punakha to the Punakha Dzongkhag court next week.
In the first case a 20-year-old girl alleged that her 42-year-old biological father raped her when she was only 14 years old.
In the second case a 16-year-old girl is pregnant after an uncle raped her.
In the third case a 14-year-old girl delivered a baby this year and the person charged is her 20-year-old boyfriend who was 19 at the time. Unlike the above two cases the third case was consensual but given the age of the girl the boy is being charged.
All the above three cases will be charged under rape of a child above 12 years of age which is a second-degree felony. This means a minimum of 9 years and maximum of 15 years prison time.
The OAG will be asking for the maximum of 15 years in the first two cases.
No offence and stuff, but like am I reading it wrong or is the punishment for rape only that much? Like maximum of 15 years? For real?
Personally I think that’s why the particular crime rate doesn’t go down.
Rape penalty should be death for real, if not worse than that. Don’t you think?
