PM keeps up medical practice on Thursday mornings and Saturdays

Lyonchhen (Dr) Lotay Tshering is living up to the Doctor title as he revealed that he goes for academic medical rounds in the JDWNRH every Thursday morning from 7.30 am to 10 am and giving advice to trainee and new doctors.

Lyonchhen also revealed that he has conducted around four surgeries since he became PM on Saturdays.

“On Saturdays if there is nothing more important then I would like to go to the Operation Theatre for a few cases and see a few patients. It is something that I love to do,” said the PM.

The Ministry of Health is supposed to have offered an alternate office for the PM in the JDWNRH but the PM has refused it.

The PM made his intention clear to continue his medical practice Thursday morning and Saturday which is a government holiday.

Dr Lotay said that he contested in 2013 due to health policies and he accepted the DNT President’s post in 2018 due to DNT’s health chapter. He said that DNT had many candidates who were driven by the health agenda.

“Health is my priority,” said Lyonchhen.

He pointed out that if people in Thimphu had health issues they not only had access to JDWNRH but they also had the option of flying to Bangkok, Singapore and other places.

On the contrary he said that for rural people even removing a gall stone meant that they had to come to Thimphu adding that their access to health care was pathetic.

Lyonchhen said that as Bhutan graduate’s health will be a key area.
