The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) Vice Chancellor, Nidup Dorji, has confirmed that the convocation will be held for the graduates of 2019-2023, totaling to 17,160 individuals.
In a departure from tradition, the convocation will not be a grand gathering at the Royal Institute of Management’s (RIM) Hall, instead, the RUB colleges have extended invitations to the graduates.
When asked about the changes made in this tradition, Nidup Dorji explained, “We have over 17,000 graduates awaiting their convocation. Even if we expect only 50 percent, that still amounts to 8,500 individuals, which is a number too large for any single hall to accommodate. By taking the convocation to the colleges, we aim to provide a setting for graduates to reconnect with their alma mater and peers with whom they could not meet since their departure from their college.”
Acknowledging that some graduates have already collected their certificates, and not everyone will be able to attend, RUB felt the necessity of holding this year’s convocation to pave the way for a return to joint convocation from next year onwards.
The dates for the individual college convocations have been set: Sherubtse College and CST on 26 May, CLCS on 18 May, GCBS on 22 May, JNEC and GCIT on 20 May, PCE on 17 June, SCE on 19 June, and CNR on 2 June.
