The remote border town is geared for a makeover

The dzongkhag municipality has set many new town-planning measures to advance the town area.

As per the Thrompon and engineers of the Dzongkhag they have looked on the maintenance and the renovations of the specific places, roads and the undergoing constructions.

Some of the activities included under this grand scheme of things are installing some street lights within the town perimeter, new traffic posts, a new town hall complex and a municipality office.

The engineer under the development control division Wangda Dorji said, this time the municipality office really worked on urban developmental works because the foremost thing and a subject of earnest inquiry in every meeting by the people were the many questions on the new planning.

“Moreover we are also in the verge of completion of overall structural plans based on the construction of street lights. The major reason for constructing of street lights is because as of now we have come under Thromde A and most of the places are dark.Public pressure was also there and we had to talk about the problem with the ministry too,” said Wangda Dorji.

The overall budget for the construction of the street lights are managed by the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement (MoWHS) and the completion date of the construction is slated for 30 June, 2013.

Some other developmental constructions in the dzongkhag are the new municipality offices where at present the Thromde office is facing problems and so the municipality has requested the ministry for a new office which would include a multipurpose hall and library hall. The construction will be done by next year as the municipality is still proposing for the budget.

Thrompon Karma Sherab Thobgyal said, “For the past two years we were not able to make any drastic changes but now I think after five years according to the budget we have proposed to the ministry, the Dzongkhag would ensure that people won’t migrate to another place. And we would rather reduce overcrowding in Phuentsholing and Thimphu too so that people would come here and see the different vision of a new Samdrup Jongkhar town.”

Presently, the exact population in the town is about 10,000 and by 2025 it is expected to be 25,000 as the municipality is investing a lot in the new infrastructures like new bus services within the city, by-pass roads, new sports centers for which the designs have been made.

The center would include the sports facilities whose absence would have deprived the people of healthy activities.
