International Day of Sports for Development and Peace celebrated

The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace was celebrated in Bhutan at Pelkhil School with the Prime Minister of Bhutan gracing the event. The Prime Minister, Education Minister and Health Minister also took part in an archery shootout.

Three students from Ugyen Academy, Pelkhil School and Paro College of Education spoke about the importance of sports and physical activities based on their experiences and research. Hundreds of students, teachers and other dignitaries gathered to celebrate the event.

Sports is an integral part of the Education Blueprint, Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay informed the gathering. Encouraging more girls to participate in sports, Lyonchhen urged the students to respect and enjoy sports for development and peace. “Say NO to drugs and YES to sports,” he added.

6th of April has been declared as the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to bring about positive influences sports can have on the advancement of development and peace.
