New water supply, new town-planning

Samdrup Jongkhar dzongkhag has come up with new drainage and treatment plants, roads, flood protection walls, traffic post and town planning for the 11th year five year plan.

The drainage in the town is spread in two places with one in the National Housing Development Corporation (NHDC) colony below the industrial area and the other in the core area of the town with three kilometers along the high way road which is also yet to be completed.

The municipality also started to construct a wall along the Dungsam chhu on both the sides with reinforced concrete cement (RCC). It will serve as flood protection for the safety of the people. The roads in the town are also under the new plans where the municipality widened the roads and black topped them with the budget allocated of Nu 17mn.

The network route of water supply source is under maintenance in Pinchinar (four kilometers away from Samdrup Jongkhar) which benefits about 20-25 households in the town and this is mainly to explore the new water sources.

An Executive engineer, Yeshi Dorji said, “25 years back there was no such constructions and no major renovations that were carried out but as of now we are carrying out the works properly and we have also changed complete set of filter media.”

“More over the main pipe goes right below the river bed and we treat the water with chlorination which is located at the hospital side (Government land),” he said.

Similarly, the sewerage/treatment plant is under construction in the core areas with the population of 3,000 under the local area plan (LAP).

The municipality also has plans for new public toilets in Samdrup Jongkhar and Dewathang with a budget of Nu 0.624mn and two market-sheds in Dewathang with minimum space for eight vendors with the allocated budget of Nu 0.358mn. A parking space is also part of the plans and the budget allocated is Nu. 0.574mn.
