PM commissions fully indigenous 18 MW Suchhu project

The 18 MW Suchhu Hydropower Project in Sombaykha, Haa was formally commissioned on Thursday.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Prime Minister congratulated all those involved – Druk Green Power Corporation, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, local leaders and communities, and private sector partners – for their collective efforts in bringing the project to successful completion.

The Prime Minister noted that this project is particularly significant as it is the first of the small hydropower projects envisioned by His Majesty The during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that what makes it especially commendable is it was entirely designed, developed, and managed by Bhutanese professionals – a clear testament to the growing capacity and talent within the country.

Such projects are expected to deliver meaningful benefits to local communities and serve as models for sustainable, community-oriented development across the country.

Electrical testing of Unit-1 was completed on March 16, 2025, involving standard short-circuit and open-circuit tests.

Similarly, Unit-2 underwent the same electrical testing procedures at 01:30 hours on March 18, 2025.
