World Kidney day celebrated in Mongar

The World Kidney Day with the theme ‘Kidney Health for everyone, everywhere,’ was celebrated on 14th March 2019 at the Nagor Middle Secondary School, Silambi Gewog in Mongar Dzongkhag.

It was organized by the Bhutan Kidney Foundation and Nagor Middle Secondary School.

World Kidney Day is an annual event observed on the every second Thursday of March. The event is a joint initiative of the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).

The event objective was to increase awareness of the importance of kidneys to our health, encourage preventive behaviors, encourage screening for timely treatment, bring the issues of kidney health and disease to public spotlight and involve the government to consider and invest in prevention measures.

The chief guest was the Dungpa of Weringla Dungkhag and participants were local leaders and representatives from Silambi Gewog, Community of Nagor, Gyelgong and Pangthang under Silambi Gewog and teeachers and students of Nagor MSS.

During the event a documentary film ‘Kidney Health in Bhutan’ and Animation film ‘Prevention over Cure,’ was screened. There was an awareness talk on ‘Access to Health Services’.

The event also facilitated Basic Health Checkups (Blood Pressure, Random Blood Sugar, Body Mass Index and Health Education including referral to the near by hospitals/BHU’s.

It covered 200 members of the public and 213 teachers and students of Nagor MSS.

The Bhutan Kidney Foundation bagged 1st prize for the best World Kidney Day activities during the 18th IFKF (International Federation of Kidney Foundations) conference held in December 2018 in Chennai, India.
