Bhutan to host World Bodybuilding Championships for the first time in 2027

In a groundbreaking moment for Bhutan’s sporting history, the country has been awarded the hosting rights for the 18th World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships and Electoral Congress, to be held in Thimphu from 2nd to 8th November 2027.

The confirmation was conveyed in a letter dated 18th September 2025, by the President of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF), Datuk Paul Chua, officially recognizing Bhutan as the host nation.

For Bhutan, which has never before hosted an international bodybuilding event of this magnitude, the announcement represents more than just a sporting achievement. It is a historic milestone that reflects the growing confidence of international federations in Bhutan’s ability to organize and deliver a world-class championship.

The Bhutan Bodybuilding Association (BBA), led by its president, Sonam Maekay Penjor (Phd), spearheaded the effort to bring the event to the country. The successful bid highlights years of dedication to building the sport locally and creating opportunities for Bhutanese athletes to shine on the global stage.

The Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) extended its congratulations to BBA, describing the achievement as a proud moment for the nation.

“This accomplishment, the first of its kind for our country, is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and vision of the BBA and its leadership. We are confident that this championship will be a tremendous success, showcasing the rich culture, unique hospitality, and strong spirit of the Bhutanese people to the world,”the BOC said in its statement.

Hosting the 2027 championship is expected to attract athletes and officials from across the globe, offering Bhutan a rare chance to not only showcase its talent in bodybuilding but also share its distinct cultural identity, pristine environment, and world-renowned hospitality. The event is also anticipated to leave behind a lasting legacy, inspiring Bhutanese youth to pursue bodybuilding and other fitness disciplines with greater passion.
