Leading RGoB’s delegation to the Third United Nations World Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (14-18 March, Sendai), Lyonpo Damcho Dorji, Minister of Home and Cultural Affairs during the Plenary session (16 March) highlighted the vulnerabilities, priorities, achievements, and the challenges faced by Bhutan in the field of disaster risk reduction.
Lyonpo reiterated that disasters, exacerbated by climate change, significantly impede progress of the developing countries, towards sustainable development and poverty reduction.
He also encouraged greater commitment from the international community towards the implementation of the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction by strengthening the means of implementation with sustainable, adequate and predictable provision of finance, technology transfer and capacity building.
Lyonpo also successfully participated in the discussions of the Ministerial Roundtable Meeting on “lnternotionol Cooperation on Post-2015 framework for DRR” which was held on March 15 201-5.
ln order to study and learn from the recovery process from the 20LL Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, the Bhutanese delegation joined the field visit to the Yuriage Fishing Port.
The Conference was successful with the adoption of the Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Sendai Declaration. There were over 4,000 participants at the Conference, including representatives of 185 governments, academia, NGOs, and representatives of the international organizations and civil societies.
