Unidentified miscreants burgled a jewelry shop and decamped with ornaments worth Nu 1 mn including gold rings, broaches and chains. This is the first incident of robbery this year targeting a jewelry shop in the city.
The shop is located right below the Norling building and the theft is believed to have taken place during Sunday night.
The jewelry heist came to light the next morning when employees of Kalay Jewellery opened the shop.
The employees, who turned up at the store were in for a shock when they found that jewelry worth several lakhs were missing. They immediately alerted the police.
The shop owner suspects that the burglars gained entry into the shop through the window behind the shop on the rear side of the building.
“The burglars had removed the grill and had demolished a portion of the window. The glass panels which are fitted to the grill had been removed and a mirror attached to it was also broken.”
The police officer said that the as-yet-unidentified robber’s foot and finger prints on the mirror have been recovered from the shop.
The police official, however, said that they do not have any specific clues yet. “We are still in the process of questioning the employees of the showroom and a few other people”.
