His Majesty The King graced the closing ceremony of the Rhododendron Festival in Sheytemi, Merak on 9 April 2025, while on a Royal Tour of the Eastern dzongkhags of Bhutan.

Royal Tour to The East

His Majesty The King is on a Royal Tour of the eastern Dzongkhags, meeting with the people and dzongkhag officials across the region.

On 10th April, His Majesty travelled to Tashigang, and granted Audiences to the dzongkhag officials of Tashigang and Tashiyangtse.

His Majesty granted Audiences to the dzongkhag officials from Mongar and Lhuentse in Gyalposhing today. His Majesty also met with the Gyalsups undergoing training at the Gyalsung Gyalpozhing Academy in Bongderma, as well as with Desuups participating in ongoing Desuung Skilling Programme courses in Gyalposhing.

His Majesty then travelled to Bumthang and met with dzongkhag officials from Bumthang and Trongsa in the evening. 

His Majesty The King is accompanied on the Royal Tour by His Royal Highness Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and the Prime Minister.

The weeklong festival, held during the peak rhododendron blooming season, promotes eco-tourism, sustainable livelihoods, and conservation in the highland regions of Merak and Sakteng. It also serves as a platform to showcase the unique heritage of the highland community of Merak and Sakteng.

The Rhododendron festival in Tashigang’s Merak and Sakteng regions was a unique glimpse into the Merak and Sakteng community’s cuisine, arts, song and dance, clothing, and way of life, amid the vibrant blossoms of rhododendrons. The highland communities of Merak and Sakteng participated in the festival, working as guides and hosts, sharing their indigenous knowledge of the regions ecological and cultural heritage.

His Majesty The King met with the highland community, as well as visitors to the festival.
