8 dead in Thimphu-Tsirang bus accident

Today morning a Bumpa Transport bus going on the Thimphu-Tsirang route was hit by falling boulders which pushed it below the road. The bus, as a result, fell and landed in the Punatsangchu river  below.

The RBP said that the final death count for the Thimphu-Tsirang Bumpa bus accident is eight deaths.

Update: Earlier one was missing suspected to be washed away but the body was founde submerged below the bus.

16 have been evacuated and are being given medical care.

The bus was carrying 24 people.

The bus went below the road around 20 km from Wangdue before reaching Basochu.

Update: The Prime Minister’s Office on his official Facebook page said that after attending to the situation at the Bajo hospital in Wangduephodrang, where His Majesty The King personally supervised and guided rescue and relief efforts, the Prime Minister  returned to JDWNRH to examine the three patients referred earlier.

Of the eight dead one was the driver. Of the 16 injured, 13 were treated at the Bajo hospital, of which eight were discharged.

The Prime Minister offered his sincere gratitude to the Royal Bhutan Army, Royal Bhutan Police, Desuups, dzongkhag administration officials, PHPA and health officials for their selfless rescue efforts. Lyonchhen said the works were carried out amid landslides and falling boulders.

Lyonchhen also thanked the Wangduephodrang dzong reconstruction project team and the Wangdue residents for arranging meals and refreshment for those helping at the site.

The PM said while RSTA has been asked to closely monitor road and weather conditions in the coming days before allowing public transports to leave the terminals, he appealed to everyone to refrain from travelling in this climate.

“We offer our prayers for those who lost their lives today, and wish much strength to the loved ones to see through the difficult time,” said the PM.
