By Chimi Kawang Selden

As Bhutan commemorates the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, it is an opportune moment to reflect upon the remarkable legacy of a Monarch whose vision has profoundly shaped the nation’s trajectory. His Majesty’s reign embodies the highest ideals of moral leadership, humility, and foresight, guiding Bhutan through a transformative era of modernization while safeguarding its spiritual and cultural essence. Under his wise stewardship, Bhutan discovered a developmental pathway rooted in compassion, sustainability, and harmony. His Majesty’s philosophy continues to serve as the nation’s moral compass, reminding citizens that true leadership lies not in authority but in service to the collective good. Thus, as Bhutanese, we honor a sovereign whose life exemplifies selflessness and visionary guidance that continue to illuminate our national journey.

His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s visionary philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) continues to define Bhutan’s unique approach to national development, an approach that harmonizes education, sustainability, and collective well-being. Unlike many global models that prioritize economic growth as the ultimate measure of success, Bhutan’s GNH framework, envisioned by His Majesty, places human happiness and spiritual fulfillment at the core of governance. Recent research reinforces the relevance of this philosophy in addressing contemporary global challenges. For example, towards an Inclusive Education Policy for Sustainability: Advancing the “Educating for Gross National Happiness” Initiative in Bhutan (2024) demonstrates how Bhutan’s education policy nurtures environmental stewardship, moral values, and social responsibility principles rooted in His Majesty’s vision of developing both the mind and the heart. Similarly, GNH integrates health, economics, and environmental harmony, offering an alternative paradigm to conventional development models that often separate material progress from human and ecological welfare.

As Bhutanese, we take profound pride in this philosophy that differentiates our nation from the rest of the world. It reminds us that prosperity is not measured solely by wealth or technological advancement but by the strength of our compassion, integrity, and coexistence with nature. His Majesty’s vision continues to inspire us to live meaningfully and to ensure that Bhutan’s path to modernization remains rooted in kindness, balance, and collective happiness, a timeless legacy that continues to guide both our nation and the world toward a more humane future.

His Majesty’s leadership represents a rare synthesis of tradition and modernity, a balance achieved through his deep respect for Bhutan’s cultural heritage and his pragmatic embrace of innovation. He recognized that a nation’s progress depends not only on technological advancement but also on the preservation of its moral and spiritual foundations. Through this insight, he cultivated a distinct Bhutanese identity that harmonizes global engagement with national integrity. Moreover, His Majesty’s environmental vision has had a transformative impact. Under his leadership, over 60 percent of Bhutan’s land is forest cover, ensuring ecological sustainability for future generations. His Majesty’s philosophy continues to serve as a guiding principle for the nation, teaching that modernization need not erode

cultural values but can instead strengthen them. As Bhutanese, we are reminded that progress grounded in ethics and harmony sustains both the environment and the human spirit.

Education and environmental stewardship remain central to His Majesty’s enduring legacy. His Highness emphasizes education not merely as a means of economic development but also as a foundation for cultivating wisdom, responsible citizenship, and moral integrity. His profound ecological consciousness is symbolically reflected in the annual celebration of Social Forestry Day in Bhutan, which honors him and underscores the spiritual and religious connection between human beings and nature.

His Majesty is also an internationally renowned sustainability leader after becoming the winner of the coveted Blue Planet Prize due to his innovative contribution to sustainability by advancing ecological balance and human wellbeing with the help of GNH. Such efforts underscore the comprehensive vision of His Majesty, which brings together knowledge, ethics, and environmental awareness and concern into the development ethos of the country. His Majesty’s legacy helps people to consider education and sustainability as inseparable duties to personal enlightenment and country prosperity.

As Bhutan marks this extraordinary milestone, the nation collectively offers its deepest reverence and profound gratitude to His Majesty, whose lifelong dedication, wisdom, and exemplary leadership have been the cornerstone of our national identity. His Majesty’s reign signifies a luminous embodiment of enlightened kingship anchored in humility, foresight, and compassion and has indelibly shaped Bhutan into a harmonious, resilient, and forward looking society.

His Majesty has not only helped to cultivate a comprehensive wellbeing of the people of Bhutan but has also made Bhutan a worldwide leader in ethical governance, sustainable development and environmental management through his visionary leadership, most notably through the articulation of GNH. His futuristic vision still rings well beyond our borders with countries around the world striving to achieve development that respects the dignity of human beings, integrity of culture, and balance in the ecological system.

When reflecting on the remarkable legacy of His Majesty, the people of Bhutan reaffirm their unwavering commitment to the enduring values of wisdom, compassion, integrity, and unity, which serve as guiding principles for both the present and the future. The life of His Majesty serves to tell us that true happiness is not an ideal, but a reality, which is achievable by righteous behavior, harmony with other people and a deep sense of devotion to the country. The nation stands eternally indebted to His Majesty, whose vision, benevolence, and unwavering dedication continue to inspire our deepest respect, loyalty, and heartfelt gratitude.
