A formal announcement will only be made once the ECB clears the move
In a move that could change the political landscape of the upcoming general elections, around eight DNT candidates including the president Dorji Choden and vice president Jigme Zangpo have agreed to join the PDP.
However, this will only be finalized after a final decision is taken on the issue by the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) which has been informed of the move.
The other candidates who have agreed to make the move from DNT to PDP are Lekey Dorji from Trong-Bardo constituency and Tshering from Panbang constituency under Zhemgang, Norbu Wangchuk from Kanglung-Samkhar-Udzorong constituency, and Kinely Dorji from Radhi-Sakteng constituency under Trashigang, The list also includes Jigme Dorji from Dremtse-Ngatshang under Mongar, and Pelzang Wangchuk from Jomotshangkha-Martshala constituency under Samdrupjongkhar.
The president Dorji Choden is from Thrimshing constituency under Trashigang while the vice president Jigme Zangpo is from the Mongar constituency under Mongar.
According to a reliable source, the DNT candidates had been approached by PDP a few days after the primary round results were announced, but the DNT candidates did not give a formal reply then.
Following the requests, the DNT in its party meeting decided to allow individual candidates to make their own choice in joining any other party. A source said that it was only yesterday evening that the candidates through a representative have formally agreed to join the PDP.
However, both the PDP and DNT leadership have declined to confirm or deny the move, though DNT leaders said that some candidates were planning to join another political party.
The Chief Election Commissioner Dasho Kunzang Wangdi has declined to comment on this specific case, but he said that he had made the stand of the ECB on candidate transfer clearly based on Election Laws.
The CEC, in the earlier interviews and during the announcement of results after the primary round had said, under Section 209, subsection C, a candidate who belonged to a party that could not make it through the primary round could join one of the parties that did.
Section 209. C says, “A person shall be deemed to be duly nominated to contest an election to the National Assembly, by a registered political party, if he or she is a member of a registered political party which could not qualify for the General Elections but is admitted as a member and nominated as a candidate by a political party to contest in the General Election. However, his/her membership in the original political party shall be forfeited.”
He had said that this could be done if the candidate resigned from his original party, and there was formal consent from both parties.
The CEC, in the past, has said that such provisions ensure that the electorate can still get popular candidates who do well, but are not in the party that gets through.
According to a source, PDP had originally approached the five candidates, Dorji Choden, Jigme Zangpo, Leki Dorji, Norbu Wangchuk and Kinley Dorji. However, the DNT leaders wanted more candidates represented leading to the additional three names of Tshering, Pelzang Wangchuk, and Jigme Dorji.
Of the eight, PDP and DNT leaders could either settle for all eight or seven of the eight candidates. The candidature of Pelzang Wangchuk from Jomotshangkha-Martshala constituency is still under discussion.
The move of the DNT candidates pending of an ECB approval, and is expected to considerably strengthen the PDP in eastern Bhutan, where it was weakest both in terms of candidates and also an organization set up.
The presence of a stronger and relatively better known DNT candidates like the president and vice president to add to PDP’s list of candidates, will not only help them in individual constituencies, but is also expected to boost their credibility in the east, which has so far been a DPT stronghold.
The move is also expected to benefit PDP nationally as electoral calculations have shown that if a majority of DNT voters vote for PDP, then it could easily get a possible of 25 to 26 seats to form the government.
The PDP will be immediately getting a sure winner in Dorji Choden who got a landslide victory in her constituency, getting 2,038 votes compared to DPT’s 809 and PDP’s 362 votes.
Another constituency that could go PDP’s way is Leki Dorji’s Bardo-Trong where Leki lost narrowly getting 1702 votes compared to DPT’s 1,869. Here, the PDP’s 910 votes would tip the balance.
The third constituency is Jigme Zangpo’s Mongar where his 1,703 votes combined with PDP’s 757 could beat DPT’s 2,335 votes.
Other candidates, Kinley Dorji and Norbu Wangchuk will have a tougher races as the combined DNT and PDP votes in their constituencies are not yet enough to beat the DPT vote count.
The situation is also the same for three additional candidates, Pelzang Wangchuk from Jomotsongkha-Martshala, Tshering from Panbang, and Jigme Dorji from Dremtse-Ngatshang. In fact, for the three candidates, whose candidatures DNT leaders have insisted upon, have won fewer votes than the sitting PDP candidates. The changes here could be a sacrifice made by PDP candidates to strengthen PDP’s overall prospects.
According to a source, the DNT candidates have agreed to switch over as they felt the primary round results showed that the people wanted change.
DNT president Dorji Choden said that nothing had been finalized as yet, though she has been approached. She said, “The party has left it to the individual candidates to make their own choices. While I am the party president, my duty is also towards serving the national interest, and for a stronger and more vibrant democracy. At the same time, voters from my constituency have also been insisting that I represent them in the Parliament.”
She said that her view on party ideology is, though each party had its own ideology it was more like a rainbow when taken together, as one party could not say no to the ideology of another. She said no party could say no to DPT’s Equity and Justice ideology or to PDP’s Wangtse Chirphel, or the decentralization of powers or DNT’s ideology to create an inclusive democracy.
On DPT’s accusations of horse trading and swapping of candidates being unethical, she said that DNT candidates would be working within the Electoral Laws. She declined to specifically comment on DPT’s charges, but said that such allegations are part of politics, and is a process of politicking.
Meanwhile, the DNT general secretary Tenzin Lekphell who himself is remaining with DNT did not confirm or deny the PDP move, but made a general clarification on behalf of DNT candidates who would be moving on.
Tenzin Lekphell said, “Firstly the elections rules allow it as DNT candidate would never move if it was not allowed. When it comes to the ideology, party candidates are considering bigger things than party ideology in making their moves.”
He said that the results of the primary round are a matter of grave concern to candidates as there is a danger of Bhutan being divided on regional lines as one party has been associated with the west and another with the east.
He said, “DNT candidates feel there is an opportunity to neutralize this by joining a party so that no party is associated with any region, and stopping the danger to the political fabric and harmony of Bhutan.”
Another DNT member, on the condition of anonymity, said that members of a prominent political party have been spreading rumors in the east that a western party was trying to dominate them.
“The candidates say that party ideology is secondary to national concerns like national unity, strengthening democracy, creating political stability, and ensuring that one party does not get too powerful,” said Lekphell.
He said that the political mood in the country was for change, and it would be of grave disservice to voters and the nation, if candidates did not make use of this opportunity to make democracy work, as this was also DNT’s prime pledge.
Lekphell said, “In the end it must work in the best interests of the nation and it is in the interest of the nation to have a strong and vibrant democracy and Parliament, which in turn needs strong and well balanced candidates between the Government and the Opposition party.”
Despite denials by DPT, the DNT general secretary affirmed that three DNT candidates including two of the winning candidates and an additional candidate had been approached by DPT to join the party.
One is J.B Rai of Phuentsholing who won from his constituency, and so far is not on PDP’s list, said that he had been approached by both parties, but would make up his mind by Monday.
The PDP candidates who stand to be replaced are Sonam Penjor from Thrimshing, Karma Chopel from Radhi-Sakteng, Dorji Drukpa from Kanglung-Samkhar-Udzorong, Kezang Wangmo from Mongar, Tshering Dorji from Dremtse-Ngatshang, Sherub Wangdi from Bardo-Trong and Sangay Dorji from Panbang.

This is utterly nonsense. The PDP should not takes the DNT Candidates; DNT candidates should not take the offer. What happens to the previous candidates of PDP? DNT candidates are morally corrupt and betrayal of their former party and party loyalists. As far as I am concerned, these DNT betrayers will not get votes. They are power-hungry. I am not going to vote for them. Such thing is now triggering my anger against both PDP and DNT. I used to be in favour of PDP, but now I don’t like PDP and DNT.
The case of Leki Dorji from Zhemgang is interesting. First he was PDP. He betrayed PDP and joined DPT. Now he wants to get back to PDP. What a swing and sway? His mind is not stable and such man cannot be our leader. Common Khenpas, let us vote for someone who is stable and relaible. We are not going to vote for him, anyway. PDP is making mistake by accepting him back; PDP might lose some voters who actually voted for it during the primary round of election because of its new candidate. Bunch of people vying for power and money…. I have completely lost my faith in them specially, to DNT. PDP is hi-fi political party and DNT is supposed to be otherwise. What they will say in their general campaign now? I really pity those PDP candidates who were used and thrown out.
This is what happens with the unclear election rules: what is the point in having the Primary Round of election if the candidates are allowed to switch and form a coalition after the Primary Round. If this is the case, then ECB should have forgone the Primary Round and save Nu. 26 Million and which likely more than Nu. 26 Million will be spent in the General Round.
Though the constitution and electoral laws are allowing the swapping of candidates but what does it speak about the party and its candidate who fought tooth and nail displaying different ideology and principles. Forfeiting of their membership from original party and switching to another party only shows the ‘Horse Trading’ which otherwise the objective of having the Primary Round is to avoid this.
Those parties who displayed their intention is not to form the gov. or in opposition but to give CHOICE to the People of the Nation is being contradicted by their actions compromising their Party Principles and their Ideology.

United we stand and divide we fall down. If as one nation and one people we hope you will favor to the western part of our country as till now many new economic developments have came up were given maximum priorities to the western region and no more concern given to eastern region.
From the past campaigns held by your party was totally neglected to the eastern part of country by not even have visited at least once also even though there were limited campaign period. If you go by like if even you won the general election and never given any importance to the east, the server consequences will be placed in the year 2018 election. This is unheard voice from the eastern zone and we hope your party won’t let down our hopes and aspirations put upon on you.

We all bhutanese citizens knew it right from the primary round that PDP and DNT were combined forced but spilted into two, just to through out the DPT from the primary round. This is very dangerous to the Nations incase DNT has got through Primary round instead of DPT, because both ruling and opposition are from the same pot.
I think ECB should not allow such precedence in place that candidates from the other parties who could not made through primary round to join the party who are in final round election.
In first place there is no point why party has to submit names of all 47 candidates in the primary round election if candidates can be changed or add latter after getting through it .
secondly in future it quite dangerous to GNH country like Bhutan. like PDP and DNT other parties can spilt into two and if both parties get through in pry round , then as I said above there is no ruling and opposition as both are from the same pot. wai ECB should be doing research on this before it is too late.

PDP as indicated by its party logo is exceptionally good at horse trading. But Bhutanese electorates are unique and unpredictable as it seemed to me. In 2008, if I am not mistaken everyone was expecting that PDP will win. But at last DPT who won by huge margin. In recent primary round, to me it looked, new parties are all against DPT. New parties wanted to oust DPT and many electorates were expecting DNT to do better than PDP. Yet, DPT won. Now, when PDP is doing horse trading, we never know what is running through the minds of electorates. People might change their minds. Bhutanese minds are too sensitive at times, a small flick can overturn other party. PDP don’t be over confident. It is very dangerous. Just simply be confident. Anyway, its people’s choice. let us watch la. Logically, I will support DPT at least for now because they have don’t good jobs. This is why people of central and eastern Bhutan are indebted to DPT. Western and southern Bhutan are far better in terms of economic development. Recent poverty report revealed that poverty is very much concentrated in eastern and central Bhutan because in the past development focus was in the south and west. The tide of developing is shifting towards east to bring a balanced development in the country. That’s what DPT is doing at the moment. And I like it very much. However, if PDP comes to power, remember eastern and central bhutan will be doomed. Our poor people will remain poorer because he will divert major development activities to western Bhutan. Hence, inequalities in the countries will widen. So, east and central electorates must vote for DPT.
This is highly prestigious move made by DNT members who are joining PDP, in particular, Dasho JIgme Zangpo and Aum Dorji choden who were among the highly decorated leaders in Bhutan. Their representation would mean cream topping of PDP. The new-PDP symbols the white horse riding in beautiful garden of cherry/peach blossom establishment of the new government (the garden) and rendering the service of wangste chripel with loyalty to the Bhutanese people (the white horse). At first, many PDP candidates withdrew from PDP after their loss in 2008 election as they did not like the party’s ideology or its president. They formed a new party DNT with the hope of winning the election in 2013. In 2013, they introduced themselves as nyamchung party so different from other parties in terms of ideology and candidates. After their loss, they again want to join back PDP starting from president and vice president. This is called greed. Power hungry and trying every means to get kabney and patang. I lost my faith on such fake and cheap politicians.

A party president joining another political party is a clear indication of no moral ethics and a sign power hunger. Aum Dorji Choden is no exception. She is a very power hungry lady if she decides to join either PDP/DPT. It is also against the constitution and is open secret although the party may claim that it is not.
Even the ECB is worried about a party President joining another party and voice similar concerns of a clear lack of ethics on her part.
Very funny. DNT seem to have forgotten that the primary round votes were for the party. With a ready excuse of regional balance and national interest, they’ve managed to nail the coffin no sooner than the party was born. By choosing to go with PDP almost lock stock and barrel, it is now proven that DNT was no more than a strategy with a feel good ideology to fool the voters. It is so disheartening to note that DNT is behaving so cheap. I am particularly sad when I came to know that President and Vice Present are leaving the party for their personnel cheap gain. With such attitude DNT is going to die slowly. Although DNT lost this time, I thought they will come strong in 2018. But now seriously doubt with such an attitude from the leaders. So SAD and I mourn for DNT..

Many people in Martsala, Samdrup Jongkhar, face security clearance dilemma due to the ‘1997 case’. They have been literally running pillar to post for about 15 years without much result.
When the people submitted this issue to the DPT President, he was taken aback that the problem still prevails.
“I did not know about this,” he said. “I thought this issue was already solved by our government about three years ago.”
He added that it is not true that the cabinet had issued an order stopping the issuance of security clearance to any person.
“I don’t know how it happened but we really need to immediately look into it. This thing shouldn’t have happened in the first place but I assure that the first thing we will do if we get re-elected is resolve this problem. I also assure you that such issues will be given utmost importance.” Since this is serious problem those who had protested to nation, will the DPT will able to solve? The very fact that DNT candidates refused to join the more powerful DPT proves that they were not power hungry. That they chose to join PDP to fight against corruption and tyranny means that they are here to serve the king, people and country. Well done DNT.

Dorji Choden, Norbu Wangchuk, Kinley Dorji, Jigme Zangpo especially please join PDP and also please clarify to your people in the East that whichever party comes to power development in the East will not stop.
Rumor is that the very night that the primary election results were out DPT party workers in Kangpara went around villages waking up people and questioning them whom they voted for.
The town is filled with accusations that it is morally NOT right for candidates, especially the president to migrate to another party when their party could not qualify to the general round. This is right on the periphery. However, if one analyzes very carefully and without any personal bias, this is going to benefit the Bhutanese democracy at large, leave aside whether ECB allows or not. What we want, ultimately, is strong representation of the general public and as balanced parliament as possible.
I am doubtful whether the move of DNT candidates to PDP can really help in solving the problem of Eastern and Western divide, Personally, I do not see and feel such divisions too. But if it really is, it is a concern which every Bhutanese and political parties cannot ignore. That, I feel, should not be an outcome of politics in Bhutan.

I would never want DPT to join forces with any other party, it is not morally right or ethical to leave ones own party to join a rival party. If they did any thing of that sort, I would not vote for them. Obviously, you and I have different ethics it seems.

Since the country is in developing phase and at the early stage and with all economic development especially hydro power projects in start stage, DPT will be very much be the right government that will change the faith of the country towards a self reliant mission in this era. i see it slow if PDP is to take up as the government. And besides see PDP president very very IMMATURE to take teh PM’s position

When she lost in 2008, she began brainwashing for support in 2013. It did work but her hope to be PM or MP was dashed and now she is PDPian. How far will she go for money?

Initially, DPT claims that DNT, DCT and PDP are basically one party, now its true. If this information is know to the general public, PDP as lesser chance to win the upcoming election. Now its clear that, DNT vision of Nymchung was just lie. These candidates were initially in PDP but pretend to form DNT and its back to PDP. they so desperate to get power . What about the people that had to travel for up to 4 days to vote, just imagine the costs and with DNT and PDP joining forces, for the general elections, there will be a much larger number that will be travelling.
This is highly prestigious move made by DNT members who are joining PDP, in particular, Dasho JIgme Zangpo and Aum Dorji choden who were among the highly decorated leaders in Bhutan. Their representation would mean cream topping of PDP. The new-PDP symbols the white horse riding in beautiful garden of cherry/peach blossom which represents establishment of the new government (the garden) for rendering the service of wangste chripel with loyalty to the Bhutanese people (the white horse). Technically swapping of candidates on a large scale can seemingly amount to defection or coalition principles and parties who joins another party at this stage of the electoral process is questionable. I feel only the winning candidates from the losing party (DNT) in the primary round should be allowed to swap. For instance, Aum Dorji Choden and Phuntsholing Demkhong candidate JB Rai should be allowed to join the PDP since the people have voted for their candidatures. Letting 8 candidates join PDP at this stage will set a bad precedence for our young democracy.
Yes we all believed and had great hope for Aum Dorji and her party DNT as being different from the earlier parties. But she has shown her true colors by joining PDP which is a party of the richest and most powerful business houses in Bhutan. What is surprising to note is that all the key people of DNT – president, vice president, spokes person all joining PDP. How many times can a person move from one party to the other. To win a post people can do all it seems – even agreeing to the enemy. If DPT offered the post, these people who were against DPT in the debates would join too…
It is important to think why the Constitution does not allow coalition…. if as many as 7 key members of a party joins another party to let it win … i wonder if this is nothing to do with coalition formation … under such situation anyone can form a party … form today and dissolve tomorrow.
Since Noene of PDP’s 7 candidates have neither been medically nor legally disqualified from partaking elections, the only law that allows them to be replaced by DNT candidates is the popular votes secured by those DNT candidates in their respective constituencies. So, did the seven DNT candidates secure majority votes from their constituencies? Here are the statistics of votes secured in the primary elections in the 6 constituencies.
In Kanglung-Samkhar constituency, DNT secured 1010 votes, =21 percent. DPT secured 2441 votes =52 percent and PDP secured 999 votes =21 percent. So does Norbu Wangchuk have the majority of votes?
In Mongar constituency, DNT secured 1703 votes =34 percent. DPT secured 2325 votes =47 percent and PDP secured 757 votes =15 percent. Does Jigme Zangpo have the majority of votes?
In Bardo-Tong constituency, DNT secured 1702 votes =36 percent. DPT secured 1869 votes =40 percent andPDP secured 910 votes =19 percent. Does Leki Dorji have majority of votes?
In Panbang constituency, DNT secured 605 votes =19 percent, DPT secured 1580 votes =50 percent and PDP secured 839 votes =26 percent. Why should the replacement be allowed when PDP’s votes exceed DNT candidate’s votes?
In Jomo Tshangkha constituency DNT secured 661 votes =13 percent. DPT secured 2264 votes =47 percent and PDP secured 1637 votes =3percent. In fact, PDP’s candidate secured more votes than Pelzang Wangchuk.
In Radhi-Sakteng constituency, DNT secured 634 votes =15 percent. DPT secured 2253 votes =55 percent PDP secured 1001 votes =24 percent. DNT’s candidate Kinley Dorji secured much lesser votes than PDP’s candidate.
Other than Dorji Chedon who was a clear winner, none of the other 6 has won the majority of votes from their constituencies. So, on what grounds should DNT’s candidates be allowed to replace PDP’s candidates? Other than the money factor, we do not find any laws that qualifies these replacements to be allowed.
People’s Democratic Party Members and Druk Nyamrub Tshogpa’s members are real ngolops of the Kingdom of Bhutan, i don’t know what they are trying to do with politics in such a small country….i don’t fear to laws… doesn’t have respects to our beloved Kings and to the people of Bhuatan in large…giving very very bad examples……

the move is indication that DNT wants to fight the tyranny and authoritarian rule of dpt. We cannot let DPT continue the mess for another five years which is a long long time. This is a brief story of DPT for every Bhutanese must understand before they cast their precious secrete vote. Pre-2008, before democratic Bhutan was established the core members of the DPT comprising 5 ministers were by then already cabinet ministers since 70s and 80s. They were the first people to comprehend the reform of Democratic Bhutan since millennium when our benevolent 4th Druk Gyalpo felt the need of decentralization system (Wangtse Chripel) in the government as development activities were taking more inclination patterns at the locations/Dzongkhags where ministers/their relatives own land (most part of western) where people were inertly feeling the regionalism. The formation of DPT and preparations started inside the cabinet ministry when our king was busy granting audience to every Bhutanese people for drafting national constitution. With the introduction of Wangtse chripel there showed no significant development in Bhutan. WHY?
Many of the FYP development such as road infrastructure, rural electrification and drinking water got brush up and suspended. Many of the ODA Projects, Grants were put on ice. All these FYP development activities converted in to pledges for the DPT in 2008.
They deferred developmental activities into their pledges and established strongest Democratic Party in Bhutan already. Now it is the people’s right to vote to strengthen the party where they will descend the own generations for candidates irrespective of their capability. In some part of the country they have already demonstrated. Wake-up Bhutanese.

I am utterly shocked at the news. I did not think in the wildest of my dreams that such moves would occur in a small country like Bhutan. We have been saying to others that politics in Bhutan is unique and clean. Now the uniqueness is being shown to us. Imagine what colors would come up in the coming years! Desire, desire, desire is all to do with all these. Let us think to ourselves whether we are moving in the direction that was envisioned by our visionary leaders. Democracy is moving towards demon-crazy, I think.
PDP talks of devolving power, but 7 of their candidates do not have the power to remain with the party and contest despite their efforts in the primary elections. Now, they are bribed and thrown away for the power-hungry DNT politicians to come in. These useless people do not understand the sentiments of those withdrawing candidates. Again, silly Norbu Wangchuk is talking about regionalism as if only he is the sharchop to represent his constituency. Was the PDP candidate not a Sharchop? He does not know what he is saying. Section 209. C says, “A person shall be deemed to be duly nominated to contest an election to the National Assembly, by a registered political party, if he or she is a member of a registered political party which could not qualify for the General Elections but is admitted as a member and nominated as a candidate by a political party to contest in the General Election. However, his/her membership in the original political party shall be forfeited.”

1. Before 2008= suspending all development (FYP & ODA Projects) in many part of the Bhutan.
2. After 2008=Resuming all the suspended development for securing votes from innocent people (mostly in eastern Bhutan)

Can you show the details of what kind of projects? Did you work in the GNH commission?How did you know that JYT cancelled the projects for self interest and not for other reasons such as lack of resources ? Evidence based information is what people will believe in. Please provide evidence.
Take some time with Annual reports of MoAF, MoLHR, MoWHS and Master FYP and other ODA plans and policies you will take at least more than one year to analyses. Still you can try.
The constitution provides it, ECB act allows it, respective parties agrees to it, individuals wants it, supporters support it, only DPT does not want it. WHY? maybe because more then 55% of the population voted for change. The JYT factor does not seem to be working for all after all. It is very obivious that some strong staunch DPT supporters does not want change and will do whatever to keep Hereditary DPT party in power. You all must be benefitting now from the few drops that trickle down. Think for your childrens future and think for the countries future. If change is not effected now, it will never. Change for the sake of change is not necessarily. In a democracy, what people vote for must be respected. Just because some individuals are not happy or hungry for power does not mean that change is necessary. Individual desires cannot be quenched at the larger interest of the nation. Few minus points will be there but no one can be perfect. if the majority of Bhutanese decide to go for a party then it should be respected. May be that party is better than others. It may not be perfect but then from among those available as option, may be this is a better one. If there is no better choice, may be choose the one that is better among the options. Bhutanese people may seem to be dull but then they know how to listen and decide. Let us not make a mistake by undermining the intelligence of the 700,000 Bhutanese people. They say “yes” to all but decide the one they think is good for future of the nation. Any party that proves to be worthy in practice will get the support.
In politics there is no place for morality and one is a fool to cling on to morality and principles. In election particularly in Bhutan one must think of winning the votes through tackful means otherwise ethics, moral, priciples etc. will never get vote and one will have to just watch opponent winning all the time. In addition one should prepare and equipped with all tricks and negative activities to overcome one’s opponent if not forget about thinking of politics.
When it is allowed by ECB, why not join the winning parties. If I were Aum Dorji Choden I would have taken the same decision when it is certain that she would win from her constituency. In comparison she is like mother to her opponent and it is better for the voters so that they would be better represented by experienced parliamentarian. As a matter of fact life is so uncertain and one should at once jump whenever there is opportunity.
Aum Dorji will not make it because she deceived her own home town people by being the president of DNT.
The peach has lost its flowers to the wind horse. So without the flowers, where is the hope for fruits. Perhaps all the flowers were sterile that they actually did not bear fruits in the recent election. Will the same flowers bear fruit in the next election… only the Bhutanese people will know. The spokesperson of the peach party said that losing some of its members (president, vice president included) would not affect the party. perhaps he is right …. the peach will not bear fruits but it is OK as long as its sister party PDP wins…. now after the recent coalition, the party’s theme “new times, new ideas” is more clearer… in a new time, to defeat the other party, it is time to change the politics by forming coalition….. coalition is not allowed in the constitution and this vision is defeated as people know how to harness the seemingly weakness in the electoral laws … show one member in the tentative list but put the other afterwards…. in fact the word tentative is aptly put ….. the peach party is rightly named …… nyamrup party …. join hands with the other to defeat ….
If anyone in India – which is the biggest democracy and one of the older (not perfect of course) reads the emotional outbursts of the Bhutanese people on the fact that some politicians of a party that lost in the first round is now joining another & forming a kind of coalition, they would find it amusing at best and shallow at worst. Amusing because as an ‘infant democracy’ we have so much to learn like not taking things so personally for e.g.. relatives joining another party instead of his or her uncle or cousin’s party. Shallow when certain views expose the fact that the commentator is clearly a die hard supporter of one particular party & arguments like the President of so & so party is the BEST and can never be replaced etc. When His Majesty the Fourth King could step down and prove that no one is indispensable the rest of us are insignificant insects and should for for one second feel or believe that ‘without me the country will fall apart’. So long as we have honest, sensible and humble ministers and a strong and capable bureaucracy with His Majesty the King – peace, prosperity and good relations with the rest of the world especially India is a given.
The fact that some DNT members have joined PDP is not a bad thing as it will make a stronger opposition (if they lose) and if PDP wins then DPT will have 5 years to reflect on why the Bhutanese people wanted change. Either way the Bhutanese voters would have ‘spoken’ and thats what democracy is all about. The fact that both PDP and DPT are picking candidates most likely to win – including ones with criminal and / or corruption cases is unfortunately not uncommon in ‘democracy / politics’ because at the end of the day they want to win. And if loopholes in the electoral system allow those with a shady past to contest then they will take advantage of it. The concern that PDP President could be another arrogant a-hole may or may not be true -only time will tell. But what we all do know is that the former Prime Minister did use his discretion a lot when it came to putting people in high places. The former Speaker for instance who was made Ambassador in Dhaka reportedly not only fired but physically abused a staff in the Bhutanese embassy and yet nothing was done about it. Similarly even though Bap Kesang had little to show as an administrator in RCSC he was made Ambassador – twice – thanks to JYT as their wives are sisters. Yeshey Zimba’s brother Sonam Tshong who has no diplomatic skills and faced serious audit objections when he was in BBS – and was removed earlier from foreign ministry – was appointed as Ambassador to Brussels! The list could on and one. So at the end of the if the people of Bhutan were to pick a lesser evil given the limited choice anyway its obvious mena?

Cynical, I agree with you in regard to Jigme Tshultrim the ex speaker, Bap Kesang who is a terrible person as many people will vouch for me and Sonam Tshong about his days in BBS. The DPT leadership, if they do return to power must address this issue of nepotism.
But I don’t agree with DNT President and VP joining PDP, first of all they have left their own party DNT, which may not survive, even if it did, no one would trust them. The other candidates are ok, but then how do you say it will be stronger when 4 of the candidates replaced actuall had higher votes that the DNT candidates that are replacing them. Don’t you think such a thing is not good for democracy.
We have already sown the peach seeds which will normally take 5 long years to fruiting and even apples take more than 5 years to bear fruit. We have all the passions and will nurture it until it blooms.
I was a silent supporter of DNT till the primary round. In fact I wished that DNT win the primary. But now after the moving of several candidates from it including the president and even some of the founders, I do not any faith. I have serious doubt on the ideology, ethics and principles. Their ideologies change depending on the direction of wind. It seems that the words such as serving in nyamchung way ….. etc …. etc were just to garner votes… now the peach will bear a lemon fruit as it has mixed genes of another tree with the manure of the wind horse.
