HH The Je Khenpo awarded Order of The Druk Gyalpo

During the 111th National Day celebration in Samtse, His Majesty conferred the highest Civilian Decoration in Bhutan, the Order of The Druk Gyalpo (Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo) to His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Trulku Ngawang Jigme Chhoedra in recognition of his lifetime of service to the nation. The award was conferred on behalf of the people of Bhutan.

Before His Holiness, the award was conferred only to Her Majesty the Royal Grandmother, Kesang Choden Wangchuk and His Holiness Je Thrizur Tenzin Dendup in 2008.

His Majesty the King also awarded the Druk Thuksey award to the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB). On behalf of ECB, Chief Election Commissioner Chogyal Dago Rigdzin, Election Commissioners Deki Pema and Ugyen Chewang received the award.

The award to ECB was in recognition of the service and effort of the commission in carrying out successful elections and in Commission’s contribution to strengthening democracy in the country. The ECB has so far conducted eight rounds of elections which includes the elections for National Council, National Assembly elections, and Local Government elections.

His Majesty the King also awarded National Order of Merit (silver) to the producers of Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation (BBS) – Karma Dorji, Chhimi Dorji, Tshewang and Sonam Tobgyel.

The award was in recognition of the service to the nation, for producing all the national assembly and national council debates which helped educate and disseminate pertinent information to the people, because of which helped the public in making informed decision.

The recipients said that the award bestowed to them is the result of collective effort made by all the colleagues involved in producing the programs.

Senior Producer Karma Dorji said the award from His Majesty conveys a message to the people that the role of media is vital in a young democracy.

Chimmi Dorji said that the award is an outcome of the team effort and serves as a further motivation to keep doing their best.
