In a significant move to strengthen democratic transparency and accountability, Bhutan’s Parliament and the media have officially signed a comprehensive engagement strategy designed to enhance collaboration, improve information flow, and promote responsible journalism.
The strategy, developed through an open dialogue during the Media-Parliament Symposium held from 11th to 13th August 2025 aims to establish clear protocols for access, ensure accurate and fair reporting, and align communication timelines with media production needs. It reflects a shared commitment to fostering mutual understanding, building trust, and supporting the vital role of journalism in Bhutan’s democracy.
Key elements of the strategy include formalized access protocols for journalists to MPs, committees, and parliamentary documents, as well as the creation of a Parliament-Media Network to facilitate ongoing structured engagement.
The plan also emphasizes the importance of timely information sharing, with agreed turnaround times for requests, publication of official calendars and sharing it to journalist ensuring media outlets receive critical updates promptly.
Both Parliament and the media have committed to capacity-building initiatives, including biannual workshops and mentorship programs, to enhance understanding of parliamentary processes and improve ethical reporting.
Additionally, the strategy promotes balanced coverage of parliamentary activities, encouraging journalists to highlight committee work, rural issues, and public outreach efforts, thereby broadening civic education.
During the signing ceremony, representatives from both sides underscored the importance of this collaboration in strengthening Bhutan’s democratic fabric. The strategy also includes provisions for crisis communication during sensitive situations, ensuring that information is disseminated rapidly, accurately, and simultaneously to prevent misinformation and maintain public trust.
The engagement strategy is a living document, subject to annual review, to adapt to emerging challenges and continue fostering a constructive partnership between Bhutan’s Parliament and the media.
As Bhutan advances its democratic journey, this initiative marks a pivotal step toward greater transparency, accountability, and civic engagement.
