Bhutan, the dragon and GMC

As part of Bhutan’s presentation at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the symbol of the dragon featured prominently in a series of intricate wood carvings, which will be integrated into the design of the Gelephu International Airport.

In Bhutanese culture, the dragon is a powerful national symbol – representing protection, power, divine authority, and the connection between the spiritual and material worlds.

For the exhibition, three unique dragons were created by Bhutanese artists to represent the country’s past, present, and future. The past is depicted through a traditional dragon clutching jewels, symbolizing Bhutan’s rich natural resources and the enduring guidance of its monarchs.
