To commemorate the 37th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty The King, the Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) in Dewathang will host the popular annual JNEC Open Football Tournament from February 21, 2017.
The theme for the tournament is “Empowering youths through sports, to become agents of change”. This is the third time the college is organizing such a tournament.
Last year, 24 teams from Phuentsholing, Gedu, Kanglung, Pemagatshel, Wamrong, Bhangtar, Nganglam and Samdrup Jongkhar took part in the tournament and Gaeddu College of Business Studies (GCBS) emerged champions to win a cash prize of Nu 70,000 and a rolling trophy.
According to Ugyen Namgyel, an assistant lecturer at the college, the annual event has been gaining popularity and the college authorities credit the success to emphasis given to the spirit of sportsmanship in recent times.
The opening ceremony of the football tournament will also coincide with the 43rd Foundation Day of the college. The college, by organizing such activity also aims to achieve their theme of “Community Service, Engagement, Involvement and Development” and promote awareness on health and wellbeing through sports and physical activities.
The winners of this football tournament will take home Nu 70,000, the runners up Nu 35,000 and the top scorer Nu 1500.
