Gyalsung and Bhutanese Youth

Gyalsung is becoming a real force that is shaping the character and future of Bhutanese youth.

With close to 10,000 Gyalsups now joining more than 56,000 Desuups, Bhutan is carrying out one of the biggest nation-building efforts in its modern history. At a time when many countries are becoming more divided and disconnected, Bhutan is trying to create something that brings young people together, regardless of background, region or social status.

His Majesty’s address at the Passing Out Parade in Gyalpozhing carried an important message about where Bhutan is headed.

When His Majesty spoke about the need for “strong people, a living culture, and a thriving economy,” it reflected the realities Bhutan faces today.

Gyalsung is not only about drills, uniforms or physical training. It is about discipline, teamwork, confidence and a sense of responsibility to the country. It gives young Bhutanese from different walks of life a shared experience and common understanding of what it means to serve the nation.

His Majesty’s comparison of Bhutan to a beehive was simple and powerful. A hive works because every bee contributes towards a common purpose. For a small country like Bhutan, unity and trust are not luxuries. They are necessities.

The presence of 44 Bhutanese from overseas in this cohort was also meaningful. It showed that even for Bhutanese growing up abroad, the connection to the country remains strong.

Gyalsung also reflects the personal vision and commitment of His Majesty. From the beginning, His Majesty has driven the initiative with urgency and clarity. Even during difficult economic times and the pandemic, the work continued. India’s support, in building the academies, deserves appreciation, but it was His Majesty’s leadership that turned the vision into reality.

In the end, the real success of Gyalsung will not be seen only in parades or ceremonies. It will be seen in the kind of citizens Bhutan produces in the years ahead.

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” Warren Bennis
