In the interest of Justice

In 2022, after the Supreme Court pronounced the verdict in the Trongsa Land Scam, the JDWNRH President and former Trongsa Dzongda Lhab Dorji stabbed an ACC Director while his family members also attacked ACC officials.

This is even though it was a well-documented and investigated land scam case with no doubts.

While we Bhutanese like to think of ourselves as a united, stable and law-abiding people all of that goes out of the window when family members and friends come under the ambit of the law.

In such cases family and personal loyalties trump respect of the law and trust in institutions. Even facts and evidences don’t matter anymore.

Family members and friends engage in mudslinging and question the very institutions that protect the law and society.

In the Namgay Dolkar case, even though there is a clear verdict from the Thimphu District Court some family members of the defendant have decided to go all out on social media and raise questions of the court and throw slander against the police, OAG and this paper for doing their respective jobs.

The friends and supporters of these family members also rally online and so many are reluctant to stand by the truth as this expanding web of social ties means that somebody knows somebody and so people who were loud for justice until yesterday decide to play safe and keep quiet for fear of offending feelings of people they may know.

Be it family or friends, they must all understand that justice will not be served as per their feelings or relations.

The family should stop promoting a dangerous argument that somehow positive social work in the past absolves you of conviction of a heinous crime.

To an extent, one can understand and even sympathize with the pain felt by the family members of a convicted felon, but it must be made clear that the pain is being caused by the actions of the felon and the wheels of justice cannot be blamed.

The Thimphu District Court has already established that the defendant killed Namgay and so it is not fair that Namgay is character assassinated as a suicidal person with mental health issues when there is no reliable evidence on that front, and especially when she is not around to defend herself.

Namgay’s father does not have the resources to hire top lawyers nor does he have an ‘extra-large family,’ and supporters to flood social media, but he has placed his faith in the justice system which will take the final call.

‘Justice is the insurance we have on our lives, and obedience is the premium we pay for it.’
