National Education Policy 2024 brings major reforms, including Cambridge curriculum alignment

With the National Education Policy (NEP) 2024 now approved, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) has begun implementing key reforms to enhance Bhutan’s education system.

These reforms focus on curriculum alignment, teacher evaluation, and STEM education, among other areas.

One of the major changes is aligning Bhutan’s school curriculum with the Cambridge International Curriculum. This transition will begin next week with the arrival of the Cambridge team.

The Education Minister said, “This alignment is designed to ensure a globally benchmarked standard of education, enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. It will equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to compete internationally.”

Ultimately, this shift will lead to the accreditation of the grade XII qualification, allowing students to earn a globally recognized certification. The goal is to strengthen students’ academic foundation while ensuring their qualifications are competitive on the global stage.

MoESD is also introducing a comprehensive teacher evaluation framework through the establishment of a Teaching Professional Council. This council will oversee the assessment, management, and professional development of teachers. “This will ensure that teachers receive the necessary support for career growth and performance improvement,” said Lyonpo.

The aim is to enhance teaching quality by providing structured professional development opportunities, and creating a system where teachers are continually supported in their roles.

Regarding STEM-focused schools, the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to advancing STEM education as a priority area. While specific updates on implementation were not provided, earlier responses to The Bhutanese indicate that plans are progressing to integrate STEM as a key pillar of educational reform.
