National Library becomes a growing study space for students

The National Library and Archives of Bhutan in Thimphu is increasingly becoming a study space for students, particularly those preparing for the Bhutan Civil Service Commission (BCSE) examinations.

According to Junior Librarian, Tshering Phuntsho, the number of students visiting the library has been increasing every year, with more than 2,000 memberships recorded.

“We have seen an increase in the number of students visiting the library every year, particularly BCSE candidates who come here to study,” said Tshering Phuntsho.

The students have access to a quiet study environment and reading materials and to the internet.

“We provide internet and WiFi facilities, and computers are also available for students. The library is open from 9 am to 7 pm,” Tshering Phuntsho said.

The library also organizes winter programs for students, providing them with space to study and access books during the winter break.

Membership at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Public Library, located inside the National Library and Archives of Bhutan in Thimphu, is open to the public. Children in Class 8 and below are required to pay a membership fee of Nu 25 and a security deposit of Nu 250. Students in Class 9 and above and adults pay a membership fee of Nu 50 and a security deposit of Nu 500.

Speaking to The Bhutanese, some students said the National Library and Archives of Bhutan is one of the few places where they can study peacefully, with access to reading materials, books and internet facilities.

“For us, this is one of the few places where we can study peacefully. We have access to books, reading materials and internet facilities,” said one student.

With more students turning to the National Library as a place to study, the growing number of visitors also raises questions about whether the existing space can meet their needs. The library is becoming more than just a place to borrow books.
