His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, Their Majesties the Gyalyums, and Members of the Royal Family graced the consecration ceremony of Pelri Dorjidhen Tsulakhang in Nobgang, Punakha on 16 September 2026. The consecration was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, and attended by senior officials as well as the people of Nobgang, Talo, and neighbouring areas.
Pelri Dorjidhen Tsulakhang was built by the 9th Je Khenpo, Sakya Rinchen, in the 18th century, and became an important religious centre. The village of Norbugang developed around the Lhakhang and hermitages established there.
The extensive renovation of two Lhakhangs, Tsulakhang and Zimchung Gom, was sponsored by Yum Thuji Zam. The Gyalyum Charitable Trust, under the patronage of Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, contributed funds towards the conservation of thangkas and textiles at the site.
The renovation was carried out under the Nobgang Cultural Site Stewardship Plan, spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development under the guidance of Her Majesty Gyalyum Tshering Yangdoen Wangchuck. The plan encompasses the conservation of Nobgang, which features a unique architectural style of traditional houses, as a cultural heritage site, and its development for the benefit of the community.
