A 29-year old man is in the custody of Phuentsholing Police for attempting to smuggle in a sizeable quantity of tobacco products in the trunk of car.
The man, from Jomotshangkha, Samdrupjongkhar, was apprehended on the evening of October 30 at the Phuentsholing main gate.
Police seized 2,352 packets of Baba Khaini and 240 packets of Wills cigarette. According to police, the suspect said he bought the tobacco products from Bow Bazaar, Jaigaon, paying Nu18,400. He also said the products were for his personal consumption and for sale.
By law, sale of tobacco is banned in the country. Tobacco consumers can bring in a limited quantity for personal consumption after paying duties.
