Chiba Institute of Technology, Japan, confers Honorary Doctorate to His Majesty

Chiba Institute of Technology, Japan, offered an Honorary Doctorate to His Majesty The King on 27 May 2025.

The university cited His Majesty’s leadership in guiding Bhutan’s democratic transition, advancing the philosophy of Gross National Happiness, and championing visionary national initiatives such as Gyalsung and the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) as key reasons for the honour.

“His Majesty’s leadership embodies what we seek to inspire in our students: ethical courage, systems thinking, and global responsibility,” the university citation read, adding that it was honoured to confer upon His Majesty the highest recognition the Chiba Institute of Technology can bestow.

His Majesty accepted the honorary doctorate from Chiba Institute of Technology (CIT), Japan, during an ongoing visit to Japan to meet with GMC partners. CIT specializes in engineering education, and partners with GovTech and Druk Holding and Investments to support satellite research and student exchanges. 

The University also conferred Honorary Doctorates to businesswoman and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, Chair of Emerson Collective, and entrepreneur and author Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, in recognition of their global contributions.
