Father stabs mother to death and 4 children left with disabled grandparents

A 34-year-old woman from Shabha, Paro died after being stabbed by her recently separated ex-husband outside a karaoke bar in Paro on 4th January 2025, at approximately 11:50 pm.  Her boyfriend, who was also injured in the attack, remains hospitalized and is in a stable condition.

The suspect, identified as the woman’s 36-year-old ex-husband, is a former army personnel member and originally hailing from Babesa, Thimphu surrendered himself at Bondey Police Station immediately following the incident. 

Police responded swiftly, taking both victims to Paro hospital.  The woman succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital as she had been stabbed multiple times.

The couple, had been married for 14 years and were parents to four daughters of which the eldest daughter was from the victim’s first marriage.

The couple had just divorced in December 2024.  Both had subsequently moved on forming new relationships including the husband who already had a longtime girlfriend on the side.

Even before the December divorce the couple in the past had separated for a while but got back together again.

According to police, the ex-husband, driven by jealousy, repeatedly contacted his ex-wife.

On the night of the incident, the suspect contacted his eldest daughter to locate his ex-wife.  Upon learning she was at a karaoke bar with a group of friends, including her boyfriend, he confronted her.  When she refused to leave with him, he retrieved a knife from his Bolero vehicle which was parked nearby and stabbed both her and her boyfriend.

After the attack, he immediately went to Bondey Police Station and confessed to the crime.  The Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) confirmed the suspect’s confession and stated the case is under investigation. 

The deceased, who ran a vegetable shop, resided with her parents and four daughters following the separation. 

The deceased, who had a vegetable shop, had been independently supporting her four children and her two old parents in their 70s along with her mother’s elder sister. All three of the elder citizens have disabilities such as hearing problems and other intellectual disability issues leaving them incapable to take care of the four children, the oldest of whom is in class eight.

The four children who are currently studying are now under the care of the three senior citizens. It is known that the deceased’s cousins reside in the same community and it is hoped if they can help as the mother has died, the father will serve a lengthy prison term and grandparents are not capable to look after the children.
