The Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority (GMCA) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with SATO Technologies Corp (“SATO”) on July 6, 2026 to explore the phased development of a renewable energy-powered AI data center campus within Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).
GMCA said the proposed collaboration reflects GMC’s broader aspiration to tap Bhutan’s renewable energy resources in support of high-value, knowledge-based industries. Under its National Energy Policy 2025, Bhutan has set a target of 25 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity by 2040. GMC has set its own target of more than 3 GW of data center capacity within the city by 2035.
Subject to further technical, commercial, and regulatory assessment, GMCA and SATO will explore how Bhutan’s expanding clean energy base can support high-performance computing and digital infrastructure.
The initiative forms part of GMCA’s long-term plan to establish GMC as a Green Technology Valley, an ecosystem in which renewable energy, digital infrastructure, research, and talent converge to support sustainable economic growth and regional connectivity.
“This collaboration reflects growing international confidence in GMC’s long-term vision for sustainable economic development,” said GMCA’s Co-CEO, Pang Yee Ean. “We look forward to working with SATO to create high-quality employment and long-term value, anchored in GMC’s principles of sustainability and mindful development.”
The LOI with SATO is one of several partnerships GMCA is currently pursuing as it engages international investors across renewable energy, digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, tourism, education, and healthcare.
