The word De-suung means Guardian of Peace. It is more than a title. It is a commitment to serve with courage, compassion and selflessness whenever the nation calls.
So when His Majesty The King envisioned the construction of 108 Jangchub Chortens as a sacred offering for world peace and the wellbeing of all sentient beings, perhaps no response felt more natural than that of Bhutan’s Guardians of Peace.
The journey began on 29 April, with the blessings of the Zhung Dratshang.
Soon after, De-suups from every corner of Bhutan, and from across the world, began making their offerings.
One by one. Day by day.
In all, 16,127 De-suups became part of this collective act of merit.
But the call reached far beyond the De-suung family.
Friends joined. Families joined. Civil servants joined. Neighbours joined. Well-wishers who had never worn the orange uniform simply wished to stand alongside the Guardians of Peace in support of His Majesty’s vision.
Even Changyul Park became part of the journey. They decided to contribute Nu 35,000/- from visitors’ entry fees as an offering towards this shared aspiration.
Together, these countless acts of generosity culminated in Nu 22 million towards one Jangchub Chorten.
Yet perhaps the greatest achievement was never the amount raised.
It was the reminder that peace is not built by monuments alone. It is built by people. And when the Guardians of Peace answer a call, thousands of others are inspired to walk beside them.
