Aum Penjor supports ‘Aum Penjor’ after watching the film

The film tells the tale of the LGBTQI community

The upcoming film “Aum Penjor” has generated considerable buzz, but not all of it is positive. Just weeks before its release, a live stream featuring Aum Penjor sparked controversy when viewers urged her to sue the filmmakers for allegedly using her name without permission after seeing the trailer. This situation has ignited a heated discussion about identity, representation, creative freedom and the rights of individuals in the creative arts.

The online anger directed against the filmmakers is over allegations that the film used Aum Penjor’s looks, character and story without her permission and without paying her.

However, Aum Penjor, in conversation with The Bhutanese addressed the concerns directly, emphasizing her excitement about the film.  “I saw the film and it is nothing related to me or my life and in fact it is a really good movie. I’m beyond proud that they made a movie for the LGBTQI community,” she shared. “The story is fictional. As a transgender woman, I fully support it.”

Despite her supportive stance, Aum Penjor revealed that she has received mixed feedback from the public. “Some people call me and say they won’t watch the film unless I’m involved, others say my name shouldn’t have been used without my permission. But I don’t let those comments affect me.”

The film’s lead actor, Tshering Dorji, also shared his perspective on the unfolding drama. He acknowledged that while Aum Penjor maintains a calm demeanor, some individuals around her seem intent on provoking negativity. “It’s odd that people who have not been part of her life are suddenly stepping in as self-proclaimed supporters. Bhutanese need to change our crab mentality. When someone is successful, it seems like we try to bring them down, just like crabs pulling each other back. If there was only one person with that name in the country, then maybe we’d need permission to use it.” he remarked.

He stressed that the narrative of “Aum Penjor” is distinct from her own life experiences, noting, that there are many people with the same name in our country.

Actor Tandin Bidha, who is one of the film producers, explained the rationale behind the film’s title. “We chose the name ‘Penjor’ because it resonates with the character we created. Penjor is a muscular name and reflects a strong identity, while ‘Aum’ is a feminine reference. Our intention was never to exploit anyone’s personal life.”

Tandin Bidha highlighted the broader cultural context, where names often hold significant meaning.

The controversy surrounding the name has led to conversations about the role of art in society and how it can be perceived. She urged viewers to watch the film before forming opinions.  She said, “It’s important to see the bigger picture. This film is about universal themes—love, humanity, and acceptance.”

At its core, “Aum Penjor” tells the story of a transgender woman’s journey as she confronts societal prejudices. Set in a community rooted in tradition and conservative values, the film delves into the complexities of identity and the courage it takes to embrace one’s true self. It also highlights the contrasts between Aum Penjor’s internal struggles and the external pressures she faces.

Many in the LGBTQI community have expressed their support for the film. The movie producer mentioned that a team from Queer Bhutan attended the premiere and appreciated how the film portrays their experiences, and stated, “Their positive feedback made us realize the importance of representing these stories and it shows that we can address social issues through film, which is something I want to continue doing.”

Aum Penjor pointed out that there will always be differing opinions on such topics. “People will say things out of concern, while others might express hate, but it’s crucial to separate those who genuinely care from those who are just being negative.”

Tshering Dorji added that the film aims to challenge prevailing stereotypes and promote understanding. “The story is not just about Aum Penjor as a person; it’s about representing all members of the LGBTQI community. We want to inspire acceptance and empathy.”

As the film prepares for its premiere, the creators are hopeful that audiences will focus on its positive message. The narrative promotes love and acceptance, encouraging viewers to look beyond names and titles.

“In the end, we are all human. We want people to see Aum Penjor, not just as a character but as a representative of a larger struggle for acceptance and understanding,” said Tandin Bidha.

“I often say that wherever there is a person, there is also a shadow. There will always be both advantages and disadvantages. While there may be limits to my work as an artist, filmmaker, and creative thinker, I won’t let that stop us. Whether the publicity is good or bad, it can help promote a film,” Tandin further added.

By sharing Aum Penjor’s story, the filmmakers aim to create a space for discussions about identity and inspire a more inclusive society.

While the controversy surrounding “Aum Penjor” has sparked a debate between right to privacy and intellectual property rights versus artistic freedom and freedom of expression, it has also highlighted the importance of representation and support for the LGBTQI community. As Aum Penjor herself stated, “This film is about all of us, and I hope it brings people together.”

The film is directed by Karma Jerry, who is also one of the producers along with Tandin Bidha and Namgay Wangchuk.

It was first screened during the Kingdom of Bhutan International Film festival where Aum Penjor had been invited along with the Queer community, but Aum Penjor missed the movie as she mistook the timing.

She saw the movie on Friday evening.
