Bhutan Esports launch Nu 500,000 international ludo championship

The Bhutan Esports Association (BeSA), in partnership with DK Bank, has launched the Bhutan International Ludo Championship on 25 July 2026, a cross-border digital esports tournament featuring a guaranteed Nu 500,000 prize pool.

The championship is part of BeSA’s broader effort to grow esports in Bhutan while pursuing its long-term vision of developing a generation of Bhutanese game creators through its ‘Gamers to Creators’ strategy.

According to the Association, the championship aims to transform one of South Asia’s most popular games into a structured, skill-based esports competition while strengthening regional digital engagement.

The tournament, hosted on a Ludo platform developed and owned by BeSA, is open to players from Bhutan and neighbouring Indian regions, including Jaigaon, Siliguri, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Kolkata and North East India.

BeSA President Ngawang Gyeltshen said that the Association’s mission is to develop esports in Bhutan, but its vision extends beyond encouraging young people to play games. Instead, the long-term goal is to equip them with the skills and tools to develop games of their own.

“The Bhutan International Ludo Championship was created to demonstrate what locally developed digital products can achieve before helping young people build games themselves. The Association hopes the initiative will inspire Bhutanese youth to move from simply consuming games to creating them”.

He said, “The championship focuses on Ludo because it is one of South Asia’s most widely played games. During the COVID-19 pandemic, records indicated that the game attracted approximately 15 million users per day across the globe”.

He added that BeSA identified Ludo as a suitable starting point because it is comparatively easy to develop, is open source and already has a strong regional audience.

He emphasized that the Bhutan International Ludo Championship is an esports tournament, not a betting platform.

“The competition follows a knockout format, meaning players who are eliminated cannot pay to re-enter the tournament”.

The Association said that the format is comparable to traditional sports such as football and archery and will be governed by official tournament rules and a zero-tolerance policy against cheating and unfair play.

DK Bank will support the tournament’s digital payment ecosystem and participant onboarding as the Exclusive Banking Partner.

Looking beyond the championship, BeSA plans to develop more locally made games in the future.

“As young people around the world, including in Bhutan, continue to spend more time engaging with digital games, we want to channel that interest into creativity and game development,” says the President.

He said that 2,000 young people participated in esports tournaments last year, and the association now aims to transform those participants into future game creators.

To illustrate the economic potential of game development, the association cited research showing that ‘Mecha Chameleon’ generated an estimated US$71.3 million to US$90 million after its release on 10th June, 2026, selling more than 15 million units within its first month.

The Association said that such examples demonstrate how game development can become both a creative and economic opportunity for Bhutanese youth.

The Bhutan International Ludo Championship is part of BeSA’s broader mission to promote youth engagement, digital skills, responsible gaming and regional collaboration through esports while positioning Bhutan as an active participant in the regional esports ecosystem.
